I eagerly read these recommendations for nature writing. I'm so thankful to show up on the list. That you enjoy Trackless Wild is balm for my soul. I thank you both so much for teaming up and for bringing me along with you.
Hi Mary, Thank you for including me in your round up of nature writing that you enjoy. I am looking forward to reading some of the books you mentioned!
Oh, I love that you are making this more global. I looked up those authors and they look great. Might you share a suggestion of where to start for someone on the other side of the pond?
I have inly read the Aldo Leopold, Mary Oliver, and Cheryl Strayed books. I will look into the others. I would add the Elemental South anthology from the University of Georgia Press.
I follow Janisse Ray and Bill Davidson's excellent substacks, and would add Chasing Nature by Bryan Pfeiffer.
Great post! I added some of these to my TBR list. Other natures favorites of mine are Braiding Sweetgrass and The Hidden Life of Trees.
I love Braiding Sweetgrass too! The Hidden Life of Trees is on my list but I haven’t read it yet.
Andrea and Mary make a great writing team! I love that they share each other’s work with their readers spreading the joy! This is a great list, Mary.
Thanks Loreley! 🥰
I was planning on taking you camping this Summer Andrea…but I guess that’s out of the question!😊
Thank you for the book list Mary!
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail with my ex husband, but only made it 200 miles.
Probably one of the reasons we got divorced!😂
Lynda,
That sounds like a story and a half. I’m so glad you enjoyed the list.
Yeah, I’m gonna need to hear that whole story. 😀

Of course! Thanks for your work!
I’d recommend authors like Benedict MacDonald, Sophie Yeo, and John Lewis-Stempel. There is a thriving group of nature writers in Britain.

I’d find it hard to decide between Cornerstones by Macdoland and Nature’s Ghosts by Yeo - both are excellent.
I added them both to my list. Cornerstones looks perfect!
Thank you for this informative post.

Orion Magazine online is a great resource too.
Thanks Ray for these wonderful suggestions and for sharing this post. I hope you have some happy reading ahead of you.
I’d have to add Annie Dillard’s “Pilgrim at Tinker Creek”. One of my nature favorites.
