Welcome to this week’s link roundup!
As always, here’s what I’ve been loving this week:
My book clubs. I’m in two student and staff book clubs at a couple of the high schools where I work. One had its first book club meeting yesterday, and the other has its next meeting this afternoon. I’ll never tire of hearing kids talk about reading and why they love what they love. I always leave these times with students and colleagues feeling happier and more energized.
Fall scents. Even though my city doesn’t understand that it’s October, I’m all about the fall scents right now. Give me all the warm, cozy, and inviting smells of autumn, like spices and cider. Was it almost 80 degrees today? Yes. No matter. It’s fall inside my house.
Apples. I’ve always liked apples, but our relationship has deepened recently. I got a bag of Honeycrisp apples during my last grocery trip, and they’re incredibly yummy, especially cold. I get so excited about yummy fruit.
And with that, here are this week’s links!
I love it anytime The Millions puts together a book preview. This one covers new arrivals for the rest of 2024. At the moment, I’m most excited about the new Murakami and Erdrich titles.
This NYT piece about a book critic in Dublin is full of gorgeous photos and fun literary info. To quote Liz Lemon, “I want to go to there.”
If you want more armchair travel, here are seven novels set in Copenhagen. I’d add Katrine Engberg’s great mystery series to the list.
Lit Hub shares the ten best books for understanding class in America.
This is an interesting look at how weeding (the library term for discarding books) has become a censorship issue and is facing legal pushback.
The other day, one of my coworkers asked me to read this poem, a favorite from Ada Limón, that he’s teaching in a class. I was happy to read it again.
Jamie Quatro, one of my favorite writers, talks with The Millions. I love the way Quatro weaves themes of faith into her fiction ways that are raw and relatable.
CrimeReads shares six books about the perils of memory manipulation. What a cool idea for a book list!
Start your holiday shopping early with this gift guide for mystery and thriller readers. I’ll take all of the stickers, please.
I’m having fun curating seasonal Pinterest boards. Here’s the one for fall.
I loved this profile of Samyra Miller, one of my favorite social media follows. She’s a Harvard grad with a ton of musical talent who’s using her influence to bring awareness about the lack of plus-sized clothing available to women. Miller will sometimes share some of the hate comments she receives, and I’m always shocked at the vitriol sent her way simply for existing in a larger body and demanding access to clothes that fit. Her work battling fatphobia is inspiring.
If you’d like to support my work, comment, share, upgrade to a paid subscription, buy me a coffee, or shop my bookshop or affiliate links. I love doing this work, and I’m thankful to have you in this community!
What have you been loving this week? Thanks for reading!
So many wonderful small treats in your links--thank you! A Katrine Engberg book just came up for me in Libby (wondering if I placed it on hold because of an earlier post here?) and your Pinterest board made me feel all kinds of cozy. Appreciated the link to the article on weeding (one of my favorite tasks when I was a district librarian) and how it highlights the need for a good weeding policy and consistency in following it.
I too have been on a huge apple and fall scents kick. Got my first fall candle last weekend!
