Hi there! This week’s roundup is full of bookish goodness. I love making and reading book lists, and there are several in this post. There’s also a short read about book theft that’s more interesting than it might sound. My favorite read of the week is the article below about lit prizes and judging. There are charts! I love a good chart, and I hope you do too.
What 35 Years of Data Can Tell Us About Who Will Win the National Book Award - Public Books
This is a fascinating look at esteemed literary prizes and their judges. The data laid out shows the importance of representation in judging.
Most Anticipated Books of 2024 - She Reads
My want-to-read shelf on Goodreads is currently at 737 titles, so what’s a few more? I’m especially excited about The Fury by Alex Michaelides, Come and Get It by Kiley Reid, Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange, Funny Story by Emily Henry, and The Life Impossible by Matt Haig.
Goodreads Members' 76 Most Popular Books of the Past Decade - Goodreads
Speaking of Goodreads, this list of popular titles among members is interesting since I’m always intrigued by what other people are reading. (I’ve read 25 out of the 76 listed.) I like seeing trends in popular books and noting which ones have picked up steam thanks to TikTok or Instagram. The list includes many darlings of social media, including Taylor Jenkins Reid, Colleen Hoover, and Sally Rooney. I was pleasantly surprised to see Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.
10 Intense Psychological Thrillers That’ll Mess with You - Off the Shelf
I love a good thriller, especially when I’m in the midst of a reading slump. This list has some promising suggestions, including Bone Deep by Sandra Ireland.
The 10 Greatest Sufjan Stevens Albums, Ranked - Paste Magazine
In my last post, I mentioned that I’ve been loving the new Sufjan Stevens album, Javelin. After reading this ranking from Paste, I realized I’m not as familiar with his discography as I thought I was. I’m assigning myself some Sufjan-related homework this week.
Book Thieves Take the Story and Run with It - JSTOR Daily
This article is a short, entertaining look at book theft through the ages.
Native American Novels, Recommended by Indigenous Booksellers - Crime Reads
I’m woefully underread when it comes to Indigenous books. This is a good list of mostly horror and mystery titles. Man Made Monsters by Andrea L. Rogers sounds great and unsettling.
18 Audiobooks I’ve Enjoyed This Fall - Modern Mrs. Darcy
If you like audiobooks, check out this list from Anne Bogel. I’m very picky about audiobook narrators, so I appreciate it when a reader comes highly recommended. The Pole by J. M. Coetzee and Acts of Violet by Margarita Montimore are on my TBR now.
How BookTok and Gen Z Are Changing the Way We Read - 10 Things to Tell You
I’m a fan of Laura Tremaine and her podcast, 10 Things to Tell You. In this episode, she talks with her 24-year-old niece about the differences in their reading lives.
